Matthew McConaughey to grads: Life’s not fair. Get over it.

Some of our favorite actors have sure been spilling the truth tea at recent college commencement ceremonies. The latest is Matthew McConaughey, who gave the commencement address at the University of Houston last Friday.

And he didn’t sugarcoat things to the new graduates.

I am here to talk brass tacks, to skip the flattery and the “attaboys” because I DO know this.

The sooner we become LESS IMPRESSED — with our life, our accomplishments, our career, the prospect in front of us. As soon as we become LESS IMPRESSED — and MORE INVOLVED with these things, the sooner we get a whole lot better at doing them.

Even better:

LIFE’S NOT EASY…don’t try and make it that way. It’s not fair, it never was, it isn’t now, it won’t ever be. Do not fall into the entitlement trap of feeling you are a victim, you are not. Get over it and get on with it. And yes, most things are more rewarding when you break a sweat to get em.

He then went on to list 13 truths about life. Yeah, they don’t really make sense, but, hey, it’s pure McConaughey!

1. Life is not easy…

2. “Unbelievable” is the stupidest word in the dictionary

3. Happiness is different than Joy

4. Define Success For Yourself

5. Process of elimination is the first step to our identity (a.k.a where you are NOT is as important as where you are)

6. DON’T LEAVE CRUMBS — and the beauty of delayed gratification

7. DISSECT YOUR SUCCESSES (and the reciprocity of gratitude)

8. MAKE VOLUNTARY OBLIGATIONS

9. From can to want

10. A roof is a man made thing

11. Turn the page

12. Give your obstacles credit

13. So how do we know when we cross the truth?

So … did his message resonate with the new grads? Apparently so. They gave him a standing ovation. They clearly think their futures will be alright, alright, alright.
